In my practice, the 2nd house is read in three steps. First, I identify the sign on the cusp — the lens through which all 2nd-house significations are filtered (Section 1 of this post). Second, I examine the lord of the 2nd — its house placement, dignity, aspects, and conjunctions (covered in detail in the companion post on the 2nd-house lord in the 12 houses). Third, I assess the five karakas above — Jupiter for wealth, Sun for right eye and authority, Moon for left eye and food, Mercury for speech and commerce, Venus for luxury and facial pleasure — and ask: which of these is strongest in the chart, and which is most afflicted? The classical rule from BPHS Ch.27 Sl.38 applies here as elsewhere: "Whatever results are stated for a Bhava come to pass only through the strongest planet among those connected to that Bhava."

The 2nd house, viewed comprehensively, is not a one-dimensional "money house." It is the house the soul has gathered around itself — its food, family, voice, face, eyes, and accumulated substance. Each of the twelve signs lenses these themes differently, and each of the five karakas governs a distinct facet. A complete reading weaves the sign, the lord, the occupants, and the karakas into a single coherent narrative. That is the work of Jyotish — and it is the work this series is designed to support.
