Planets in the Fourth House: 9 Grahas & Their Effects
The 4th house — Sukha Bhava — is the deepest room in the chart: the mother, home, landed property, vehicles, formal education, the heart, and the peace every client eventually asks about. I have found no house where the bhava and the sukha diverge so sharply; a client can own three floors of a building and have no rest anywhere in them. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra closes Chapter 17 with the governing rule: when the 4th House is under benefic influence the effects will be auspicious; under malefic influence, inauspicious (BPHS XVII.14). This article works that sloka out planet by planet, on B. V. Raman's line readings (How to Judge a Horoscope, Ch.7) and Parashara's karakas (Ch.34).
Where the 4th-house lord in the 12 houses shows where your peace is sourced, the planet sitting in the 4th is the quality of that peace; the 4th house through the 12 signs gives the house's own temperament. And here who the planet is for your lagna matters as much as which planet it is.
Quick-Reference Table
Planet | Natural Nature | Headline Effect in the 4th House |
Sun | Malefic | Restless, hard early home life; inheritance promised; occult and philosophical pull |
Moon | Benefic | Strongest mother-and-home signature; risk to the mother if afflicted |
Mars | Malefic | Property without peace; quarrels at home; political fire |
Mercury | Benefic | The vidya placement — education, diplomacy, music and travel |
Jupiter | Best benefic | Clean heart, learned, peaceful home, spiritual depth |
Venus | Best benefic | Vehicles, refined home, deep mother-attachment, domestic concord |
Saturn | Malefic | Early hardship, distant mother, property through labour, seclusion |
Rahu | Shadow malefic | Unconventional home life, foreign residence, fraud around property |
Ketu | Shadow malefic | Detachment from mother, home and property; sudden reversals |
Functional nature shifts all of these by lagna — see the lagna-turn notes in each section.
Sun in the 4th House — The Restless Heart
B.V. Raman: generally unhappy and mentally worried; roaming about; the position promises some inheritance; interest in occult and philosophical studies; success in the political field is difficult (Ch.7).
The Sun is the karaka of the father and of authority; placed in the house of the mother and inner life, his light becomes indoor light and sits uneasily there. In my consultations this is the strong-or-absent-father signature: the native leaves home early or psychologically, and spends decades learning to rest. Fortified, the Sun promises financial benefits by inheritance (Ch.7).
Lagna turn: for a Libra ascendant the 4th is Capricorn — the Sun in Saturn's sign makes the discipline of the home the lifetime project.
Moon in the 4th House — The Mother's Signature
B.V. Raman: possesses house; derives happiness from relatives; cheerful and contented; becomes important as a leader or ruler; proud and somewhat quarrelsome; early separation from the mother if the Moon is afflicted (Ch.7). And from his worked charts: the Moon is in Matrubhava (4th house). This is definitely injurious to the mother (Ch.7, Chart 66).
The Moon is the karaka of the 4th (BPHS Ch.34), yet the karaka in her own house concentrates the significations (karako bhava nashaya), and the tradition reads that weight onto the mother herself — Bhavartha Ratnakar: the mother will be short-lived if the Moon is in the 4th house (Ch.4, st.5). I read the placement as the mother's health and presence becoming the axis of the native's emotional life — strengthened by benefic support (BPHS XVII.6), strained under malefic contact. Unafflicted, it is the strongest home-and-heart placement in the zodiac — houses possessed, relatives held close, leadership from home.
Lagna turns: for an Aries ascendant the 4th is Cancer — the Moon in her own sign, the fullest expression. For an Aquarius ascendant the 4th is Taurus, the Moon exalted: a stabilising mother, the home feeding wealth.
Mars in the 4th House — Property Without Peace
B.V. Raman: a generally bad combination; deprived of happiness from mother, relations and friends, but success in the political line; quarrels with mother; if Mars joins Rahu or Ketu, tendency for suicide; the person will own houses but will not be happy on that account (Ch.7).
Mars is the karaka of land and immovable property: Mars in the 4th does deliver the property — what it does not deliver is the happiness it was supposed to carry. This is the cleanest illustration of the 4th's two halves, bhava and sukha: Mars fills one while draining the other. I have seen it in clients with substantial real estate and fractured domestic lives; afflicted, the same Mars strips what it grants — Raman warns the 4th occupied by Mars or Saturn loses property and wealth (Ch.7).
Lagna turns: for a Leo ascendant the 4th is Scorpio — Mars in his own sign and simultaneously yogakaraka (4th and 9th lord): formidable property through struggle. For a Libra ascendant the 4th is Capricorn — Mars exalted: land and authority through sheer effort. For an Aries ascendant the 4th is Cancer — Mars debilitated: the classic difficult-mother karma, though neecha-bhanga rewrites it substantially.
Mercury in the 4th House — The Vidyasthana Placement
B.V. Raman: shines well as an educationist or diplomat; boldly criticises the Government; held in great esteem; commands a good conveyance; taste for music and fine arts; witty in speech (Ch.7). And: Mercury in the fourth makes one proficient in astrology (Ch.7).
The Uttara Kalamrita gives the 4th house to Moon and Mercury together: the Moon for the mother and home, Mercury for formal education. Mercury in the 4th is the karaka in his own vidyasthana, and unlike the Moon's concentration his is read favourably: learning is strengthened, not burdened. In my files it dominates among teachers, analysts, diplomats, and working astrologers. BPHS XVII.7 confirms the axis: 4th lord and Venus in a kendra with Mercury exalted in Virgo gives the mother's full happiness. And since the 4th opposes the 10th — the government, the employer — Mercury there becomes the native's loyal opposition.
Lagna turns: for a Gemini ascendant the 4th is Virgo — Mercury exalted in his own house and lordship: education at maximum. For a Pisces ascendant the 4th is Gemini — Mercury in his own sign as 4th lord: the home is a library, the mother the first teacher.
Jupiter in the 4th House — The Clean Heart
B.V. Raman: philosophically inclined, learned, happy; possesses the favour of the ruling class; religiously inclined, respected and fortunate; peaceful domestic environments; great spiritual advancement (Ch.7). And: the native's heart will be clean if Jupiter is in or aspects the fourth (Ch.7).
If a single placement answers "will this person be at peace?", Jupiter on the 4th is the strongest yes the tradition offers. Vaidyanatha Dikshita, quoted by Raman, directs us to the fourth house and Jupiter for judging happiness (Ch.7) — the karaka pouring its own substance into its own house; Bhavartha Ratnakar: extremely happy if Jupiter occupies or aspects the fourth (Ch.4, st.2). In practice: a generous, ordered home, a dharmic mother, and later decades that deepen.
Lagna turns: for an Aries ascendant the 4th is Cancer — Jupiter exalted: the best mother-home-peace configuration I know. For a Libra ascendant the 4th is Capricorn — Jupiter debilitated: peace comes late, with a strong 4th-lord Saturn as the classical relief.
Venus in the 4th House — The Vahana Yoga
B.V. Raman: well versed in music, polished manners, deep attachment to mother, many friends, conveyances and houses; a favourable yoga for affairs of a domestic nature, concord and happiness (Ch.7).
Venus is the vahanakaraka and the 4th is the vahanasthana — the karaka at home, and the tradition is unambiguous in its favour: vehicles, houses, refined comfort, music. Bhavartha Ratnakar singles it out for musical proficiency (Ch.2); Raman lists Venus strongly posited in the fourth among the combinations for possessing houses (Ch.7). In my files this is the placement of beautiful homes — not always large, but with art and order. The mother-attachment distinguishes Venus from the Moon: the Moon in the 4th is the mother-axis; Venus adores the mother. Under affliction, abuse of artistic talents; well-disposed, the best thing after Jupiter that can happen to a home.
Lagna turns: for an Aquarius ascendant the 4th is Taurus — Venus in his own sign as 4th lord: the fullest vahana-and-sukha yoga. For a Sagittarius ascendant the 4th is Pisces — Venus exalted: the home becomes a work of art.
Saturn in the 4th House — The Late Homecoming
B.V. Raman: sickly during early years; deprived of mother and unhappy; will not inherit any property; troubles from houses and vehicles; desire to live a very secluded life; unfavourable for domestic or family affairs unless beneficially aspected (Ch.7). And the modifier that governs everything: Saturn's position in the fourth, unless he is Lagnadhipathi, is not favoured (Ch.7).
That caveat is the placement in five words. Saturn in the 4th is the classic hard-childhood signature: a cold, duty-bound, or emotionally rationed early home; a distant or overworked mother; property that arrives late and by labour, never by inheritance. The remedy is benefic aspect or association — but the functional turn reverses it entirely. For a Libra ascendant, Saturn owns the 4th and 5th — the yogakaraka — and Saturn in the 4th there has produced stable, property-rich domestic lives — the home is built, decade by decade, and it holds. For a Cancer ascendant, the 4th is Libra — Saturn exalted: the early hardship resolves into commanding property and domestic authority after mid-life. Even the seclusion desire is not failure: Saturn in the inner house makes the mature decades genuinely peaceful.
Lagna turn: for a Capricorn ascendant the 4th is Aries — Saturn debilitated: the hardest early-home reading, relieved by a strengthened 4th-lord Mars or a Jupiter aspect.
Rahu in the 4th House — The Unconventional Home
B.V. Raman: foolish in behaviour; few friends; will be subjected to fraud or guilty of fraudulent action (Ch.7). And: a hypocrite, sweet in words but dangerous at heart, if Rahu joined or aspected by evil planets is in the fourth (Ch.7).
Rahu's 4th-house lines are among the harshest in the chapter — yet Raman's education section points elsewhere: Rahu's position in the fourth or fifth generally favours diplomacy, the ability to probe into the minds of others (Ch.7). In my consultations: settlement far from the birthplace, a home always in transition, property deals with a whiff of the unusual, and an intense, complicated mother-relationship. The fraud line runs both directions, exactly as Raman writes it — check Rahu's dispositor before judging which way it cuts.
Ketu in the 4th House — The Detached Root
B.V. Raman: deprived of mother, properties and happiness; lives in a foreign place; exceptional experiences at the end of life; reversals and sudden changes (Ch.7).
Ketu in the 4th is detachment at the chart's root. The significations Ketu touches, it releases — and the 4th's are the ones the ego most wants to keep: mother, home, land, peace. In practice: a native given a home who remains inwardly unhoused; who loves the mother across an unbridgeable distance; who inherits property and lets it go without regret. But Ketu is the moksha karaka, and the 4th is the house of the heart (hridaya) — Ketu there turns attention decisively inward, and Raman's "exceptional experiences at the end of life" shows late spiritual openings and domestic reversals.
How to Read an Empty 4th House
Most charts have no planet in the 4th — and the empty house is not a silence: Raman's strongest mother-longevity example (Chart 75) has an unoccupied 4th, judged entirely through its lord and aspects.
The sign on the cusp gives the home's temperament — the full method is the 4th house through the 12 signs.
The 4th lord — the house holding it receives your peace, mapped in the 4th-house lord in the 12 houses. BPHS XVII.2-3 makes the lord's dignity the primary determinant; occupants only modify it.
The aspects — the 4th receives the direct 7th-aspect of whatever occupies the 10th: career sits opposite home. Jupiter aspecting an empty 4th is among the strongest peace-givers (Bhavartha Ratnakar: happy if Jupiter occupies or aspects the fourth).
The karakas — the mother by the Moon (BPHS Ch.34), vehicles by Venus, education by Mercury, land by Mars. Raman's seven timing factors — lord, occupants, aspects, planets linked to the lord, the 4th from the Moon, the karaka — complete the reading the moment a dasha activates any of them (Ch.7).
For the parallel treatment, planets in the 3rd house follows the same nine-graha method.
Key Takeaways
The planet in the 4th is the quality of your peace; the 4th lord is its location; the sign on the cusp is its temperament — BPHS XVII.14 is the master key.
Moon in the 4th is the mother's signature at full volume — the strongest home placement, with the karaka-concentration caveat attached.
Mars in the 4th delivers property without promising peace — the clearest split between bhava and sukha.
Mercury is the vidya placement; Jupiter and Venus are the two great benefic homecomings.
Saturn must be read twice — as natural malefic, then by lordship: as yogakaraka for Libra ascendants it builds the home it once denied.
To know which graha governs your 4th house and what it means for your home, mother, and peace of mind, a full reading — lagna, 4th lord, occupants, running dasha — answers it properly.
